Description
Often referred to as the American Sarouk, the Farahan and Sarouk are produced in the same region of Iran. However, these two rugs have distinctive styles and designs that set them apart but with plenty of crossovers. The Farahan rug itself is often divided into two categories as either simply a Farahan or a Farahan Sarouk. And to add even more complication, some Farahns feature traits of both types, making it a bit more challenging to isolate one style or the other.
The Farahan rug made its debut at the world exhibition in 1873 in Vienna. Since the revelation of that exquisite display, the Farahan has reached aesthetically-appreciative collectors with its more-sophisticated, artistic designs and palace-sized carpets. This particular Farahan is a careful combination of the Herati motif, fronds, and other florals in a circular symmetrical medallion centered amongst a scarlet field of more scrolling florals.
